Earth Day Fun with Toddlers {Planting Sprouts}

This morning the boys and I ventured out to the Houston Arboretum and Nature Center with a few friends. Every Monday morning they host a Tyke Hike for the little ones. There's always a theme- last week it was Bumblebees and today it was Sprouts- that the kids love to get excited about!

We started off by reading  a story, and then took a hike along a trail at the Nature Center. The Naturalist hid "seed signs" along the way for the kids to find! :)

At the end of the trail they had a fun Earth Day surprise for the kids. They all got to plant their very own sprout and take it home! Here's what you can do to plant a sprout with your little one:

You'll need:
1. An empty tennis ball container
2. Planting soil
3. Seedlings {We were provided Christmas Pole Lima Beans}
To plant your sprout:
4. Add a small amount of soil to your container
5. Get your seeds ready
6. Place them in your container, then add a bit of dirt on top
7. Show off your planted seeds to Mommy!
After planting our seeds we took the kids over to the "Nature Playground" to burn off some steam.
The Arboretum provided us with lids for the containers so that we could safely transport our plants home. They're now sitting on our back porch getting some much needed sunshine! Hopefully they'll start to sprout in a few days. I can't wait to see how excited the boys will be once their plants start to grow before their eyes. :)

If you have any Nature Centers or Arboretums in your area, I suggest calling to see if they offer any free programs for kids. The boys and I plan on attending all of the Tyke Hikes through the end of the season. They love getting out in nature and exploring new things! :)
Did you do anything fun today with your kids? Is there a Nature Center in your town?

  1. This looks so fun! I'm going to have to tell my playgroup about it.

    1. It's so fun! I will be going next week with the boys if you want to meet up. It's actually only for 18mos- 3 years.. but Aidan is over 3 and they don't mind! :)
